Jalmatrix – GIS-Based Real-Time Water Quality Monitoring Pilot

Jalmatrix GIS based satellite water quality monitoring platform by Mechwat Technologies using Sentinel-2 and geospatial analytics

Jalmatrix – GIS-Based Real-Time Water Quality Monitoring Pilot

Project Overview

Mechwat Technologies is developing Jalmatrix, an ongoing pilot-scale GIS-based water quality monitoring and intelligence platform designed to transform satellite, geospatial and field data into actionable insights for lakes, reservoirs and other surface-water bodies.

The platform integrates Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, Google Earth Engine, GIS analytics, historical time-series analysis and field/laboratory validation to identify changes in water condition, pollution patterns and emerging environmental risks.

Jalmatrix is being developed to move conventional water-quality monitoring from isolated sampling toward continuous, spatially intelligent and scalable water surveillance.

Key Capabilities Under Development

  • Satellite-based water-body monitoring
  • GIS mapping and geospatial intelligence
  • NDWI & MNDWI water-extent analysis
  • NDCI and chlorophyll-related monitoring
  • Turbidity and suspended-material indicators
  • Historical water-quality trend analysis
  • Pollution anomaly and risk detection
  • AI/ML-based forecasting framework
  • Field and laboratory calibration
  • IoT and mobile-sensor integration pathway
  • Searchable water-body intelligence dashboard
  • State, district, city and water-body level analysis

Pilot Technology Approach

Jalmatrix uses Sentinel-2 Surface Reflectance imagery and geospatial algorithms to analyze optical indicators of water condition.

The pilot architecture combines:

Satellite Observation → GIS Analytics → Water Quality Indicators → Field Validation → AI/ML Analysis → Risk Intelligence → Decision Dashboard

Parameters such as pH, TDS, BOD, COD, nutrients and microbiological indicators are not treated as direct satellite measurements. Jalmatrix is developing field-calibrated and sensor-supported approaches for parameters that cannot be reliably derived from satellite imagery alone.

This validation-first approach is central to creating scientifically credible water intelligence.

GIS Water Intelligence Dashboard

The developing Jalmatrix dashboard is designed to allow users to:

  • Search water bodies by name or ID
  • Filter by state, district and city
  • Select water bodies directly from the GIS map
  • Analyse historical date ranges
  • Compare water-quality indicators over time
  • Identify abnormal changes and pollution hotspots
  • Visualize satellite-derived water-quality layers
  • Support future integration with IoT and field observations

The platform architecture has been designed to manage a large geospatial database containing thousands of mapped water bodies, creating a pathway from pilot validation toward large-scale monitoring.

Project Impact

Jalmatrix aims to enable earlier detection of water-quality deterioration, improved pollution surveillance and data-driven prioritization of water bodies requiring investigation or intervention.

The project demonstrates Mechwat’s evolution from conventional water and wastewater engineering toward digital water intelligence, GeoAI and environmental monitoring infrastructure.

Potential applications include:

  • Lakes and reservoirs
  • Municipal water bodies
  • Urban water systems
  • Industrial regions
  • Drinking-water source surveillance
  • Watershed monitoring
  • Pollution-source investigation
  • Restoration-project monitoring
  • Government environmental programmes
  • ESG and environmental MRV
